On Book Lists and a 21st Century Book List for the Northwest Gold Medal Reads Inspired by the Olympics

The Spokane Public Library’s Northwest Gold Medal Reads

The Spokane Public Library’s Northwest Gold Medal Reads is a book club with a dedicated group of readers from across the Inland Northwest. Each year, they read about a dozen books set in the Inland Northwest or written by authors from the region and featuring our region's culture.

This year, their "21st Century Book List" features a selection of diverse contemporary books that highlight the rich culture and stories of our region.

Getting Started

To participate in Spokane Public Library’s Northwest Gold Medal Reads, pick up a reading log at any branch of the Spokane Public Library. Read some or all of the books on their list by September 11, 2023.

Then, fill out and return your reading log by September 11th to be entered to win great prizes. Winners will be announced at the Northwest Gold Medal Reads Author Night on September 28th at the Bing Crosby Theater.

A 21st Century Book List for the Northwest Gold Medal Reads Inspired by the Olympics

This year's book list features 12 fiction and nonfiction titles for readers of all ages.

  • The Only Woman in the Room: A Doctor’s Reflections on Her Life in Medicine by Laurieann A. Heaps.
  • Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden.
  • There There by Tommy Orange.
  • The Round House by Louise Erdrich.
  • The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.
  • Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid.
  • On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong.
  • The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.
  • Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner.
  • Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters.
  • Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford.
  • Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell.

The books on this list explore a wide range of Northwest themes and topics including: indigenous culture, race, identity, family, love, adventure, and survival.

Many of these books have received awards or have been featured on bestseller lists, including Crying in H Mart and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. Others, like Hamnet explore compelling historical figures drawing global attention.
