Christianity In Hungary Exploring The Faith

Christianity in Hungary: Exploring the Faith

Historical Background

Christianity has a rich history in Hungary, with the first recorded conversion to the faith occurring in the late 10th century. Since then, Christianity has played a significant role in shaping Hungarian culture and society.

Present-Day Landscape

According to the 2022 national census, around 425 of the population identified themselves as Christians, making it the largest religion in the country. Catholicism remains the dominant denomination, accounting for 292 of Hungarians, while Protestantism has a significant following as well.

Recent Developments

The 2011 census data indicated that Christianity continued to be the predominant religion in Hungary, with approximately 52 million adherents. The 2021 census was postponed due to COVID-19, but early results suggest that the religious landscape remains largely unchanged.

Demographics

In the 2022 census, 60% of the population answered the question on religion or denomination. Of the respondents, 73% (approximately 42 million persons) identified as Christians.

Other Faiths

While Christianity is the dominant religion in Hungary, there are also adherents of other faiths, including Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. The Hungarian Evangelical Brotherhood MET has approximately 8500 members, and the Hungarian Pentecostal Church also has a presence in the country.
